ICT in classroom

Using multimedia in instruction

According to Cognitive theory of Multimedia Learning proposed by Richard Mayer, incorporating digital media elements into instruction allows students to learn better since they use multiple sensory modalities. This motivates students to pay more attention to the information being presented. This also allows better retention of information.

The other advantages of using multimedia are it motivates students , it caters for different learning styles as students can see, hear, and imagine what things feel like as multimedia is used to bring a subject to life.

I have used multimedia in instruction extensively in my classroom, during my first semester while I was teaching ICT to year 7 students, I taught a lot of multimedia applications such as PowerPoint, Windows Moviemaker, and Audacity. While demonstrating how to use these applications, I used a number of existing YouTube videos to show students how to use the software. Also I created flyers with images and text to give instructions to students.

During my second semester while I was teaching History to grade 10 students, I integrated multimedia in my instructions, students watched movies regarding WW1, atom bomb etc. I also had them working on MS Publisher to make newspaper articles and also windows Movie maker.

PowerPoint and Prezi are two tools which allow the creation of multimedia presentations; I have previously experience in creating presentations using PowerPoint. But I recently tried using Prezi to make a presentation; it was very user friendly software and provided a lot of flexibility. I enjoyed using the software.

The following link talks about the various advantages of using multimedia in instruction.

Windows Moviemaker in my classroom

My year 10 history students had to create a movie related to World War 1 using Windows Movie Maker, I demonstrated how to use the software and the students then went ahead and created their own movies. They did a wonderful job in creating the movies, I then screened the movies in a movie festival that I held in the class. This was a wonderful opportunity to integrate ICT into history and the students enjoyed the experience. I have uploaded one of the movies created by my students .

A picture tells a thousand words ( Creating collage using Adobe Photoshop)

During teaching ICT for my year 7 students I taught them adobe Photoshop where they had to create a collage using it. This was part of a lesson in digital photography; in the first part of the lesson the students captured different kinds of images which are portrait, landscape and abstract. In the second part of the lesson they combined these images and created a collage. I have included an instruction flyer I created for my students here.

Sound Editing using Audacity

I have previously taught my year 7 students to use Audacity to edit audio. They then used this audio and integrated it into a movie using Movie maker. Before teaching this class my knowledge in Audacity was nil, I found some useful videos on the internet that demonstrated how to use Audacity, the software was quite user friendly and I found it to be very good.

Creating websites using HTML

I had the opportunity to teach basic HTML to grade 12 students during my placement. I taught the basic HTML tags to the students such as headings, fonts, tables, image etc. The students then progressed to using Dreamweaver to create a website.
